Whoopie Pies originated in the Pennsylvania and New England areas. In PA, the miners took them in their lunches as an easy to eat dessert. Think cupcake tops with the icing on the inside. Although, some make them with marshmallow type fillings, I prefer the white icing or cream cheese icing centers. My favorite is the Pumpkin whoopie pie, but you can do chocolate with vanilla icing, chocolate with peanut butter icing, red velvet with cream cheese icing, and so on. The Pennsylvania Amish still sell them at the shops.
